Making a Difference

Gilchrist Hospice Care

I can’t believe it’s almost been a year and a half since Gilchrist Center Howard County opened in May 2011. In this time, we have taken care of over 600 patients and their families at this wonderful and much-needed inpatient hospice center.

I recently received a note from friends Mary & Joe Barbera, who had visited a mutual friend of ours at GCHC. In that note, they had nothing but praise for the new center: “Everyone who had visited commented on what a wonderfully comfortable place it is,” they wrote. “This is now our third friend that has been in hospice at Gilchrist over the past year. Please know that your ministry truly is making a difference in our community.” When I met up with them a few days later, they again told me how much they appreciated GCHC and the care we provided for their friends. I thanked them for their support, both past and present, of our efforts to provide the finest in end of life care.

It makes me feel so proud to be a part of the end of life care provided by our skilled staff and to know that they are offering comfort to the families we serve. While I am not involved directly with patient care, I hear from families and staff about the extraordinary work being done at GCHC and feel grateful to be part of such an important time in these families’ lives. It is my job to help raise the money that helps support this crucial resource and to ensure its continued presence in the county.

The Barberas, owners of Aida Bistro & Wine Bar in Howard County, will again take part, as they have for many years, in the annual Taste & Auction of Howard County. Because of their continued support and the support of the other 25 restaurants and caterers who are donating their time and scrumptious food at this year’s Taste GCHC will continue to receive the funds it needs to operate. All proceeds from sponsorships, a cash raffle, silent and live auctions and ticket sales for the 2012 Taste event, which will be held Sunday, October 21 from 5 to 9 p.m. at Turf Valley in Ellicott City, will again be earmarked for GCHC.

I appreciate the support of all of our sponsors, restaurants, volunteers and donors to help make this event a huge success. You can make a difference by attending the 2012 Taste & Auction of Howard County and supporting Gilchrist Hospice Care.

Savor, Celebrate & Support Gilchrist Center Howard County

Cliff Hughes, Gilchrist Hospice Care

Twenty five years ago I started helping with fundraising events for Hospice Services of Howard County. I’ve watched as the organization has grown and continued to provide excellent care to our families dealing with end of life challenges. Our fundraising efforts continue to provide these valuable services regardless of someone’s ability to pay.

In 1997, we merged with Hospice of Baltimore, it brought two partners together who had the same philosophy of providing a high standard of quality care and compassion to our families.  Hospice of Baltimore also had it’s own acute inpatient facility, Gilchrist Center, located in Towson. This added a much needed component in the overall care we were able to provide to our families.

In time, the need for an inpatient facility in Howard County has grown. The organization,  known as Gilchrist Hospice Care since 2008, opened Gilchrist Center Howard County located off of Cedar Lane in Columbia. We celebrated the opening on May 23, 2011 and have since served over 130 families most who live in Howard County.

I’m happy and excited to say that as of May I have joined the team of Gilchrist Hospice Care to continue to raise funds in Howard County to help with the operation of this new facility. We currently have a 2.5 million dollar fund  raising campaign to pay for one time construction costs and to provide ongoing capital to offset unreimbursed expenses related to the operation of Gilchrist Center Howard County.

On Sunday, October 23rd  from 5 – 9 PM we will have our major  fundraiser at Turf Valley The 26th Annual Taste & Auction of Howard County.”  Twenty five of Howard County restaurants and caterers will bring examples of their specialties for guests to savor. The silent and live auction’s have a lot of great items that are listed on our website. All of the money raised at this event will support the Gilchrist Center Howard County.

Come  Savor, Celebrate & Support !

Grateful for your contributions

Lori D. Mulligan, Director of Development, Gilchrist Hospice Care

During the last fiscal year, I am happy to report that we were able to raise more money to benefit direct patient care at Gilchrist Hospice Care than ever before. Despite a continually struggling economy, belt-tightening individuals still generously opened their hearts and wallets to assist us in our efforts to provide the finest in end of life care for terminally ill residents of Central Maryland and for the families they will leave behind.

We are grateful for our donors’ help. The addition of new and needed programs to our continuum of hospice services (including our pediatric hospice program, Gilchrist Kids; and our second inpatient center, Gilchrist Center Howard County) has resulted in a significant increase in our non-compensated care costs – those costs of providing care that exceed insurance reimbursements. From July 1, 2010 to June 30, 2011, we absorbed $2.6 million in such costs.

While many choose to donate to Gilchrist Hospice Care through one-time donations or by responding to the fund-raising appeals we mail out each year, we also offer the opportunity to donate by participating in fun and exciting events, whose proceeds are dedicated to helping support our compassionate services.

Every year, we host Taste & Auction of Howard County at Turf Valley in Ellicott City. This year’s event will be held on October 23 from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. and offers the sweet and savory fare of more than 20 of Howard County’s finest chefs and restaurateurs, as well as a cash raffle and a live and silent auction.

More immediately, however, we are proud to have been chosen as the beneficiary of this weekend’s 85th birthday celebration for Lillian Aida Barbera, mother of Aida Bistro & Wine Bar owner Joe Barbera. In honor of this momentous occasion, Aida Bistro will be donating a portion of all food sales during the coming weekend (Friday, August 26 to Saturday, August 27) to support Gilchrist Center Howard County, our new inpatient center in Columbia.

Thank you to everyone who has so generously donated to Gilchrist Hospice Care. Whether it was by showing your support through one of our events or by a donation because of the care we provided to a loved one, your contribution does make a difference for our patients and families and allows us to continue providing the finest in end of life care.
