At Gilchrist, we think of our staff and volunteers as a team ̶ a team of collaborators who have a common goal to provide patients and their families with the expert care and support they need, when they need it.
As part of that team, Gilchrist social workers will provide support and counseling for patients, caregivers and other family members, as well as assistance in accessing resources, in making alternative living arrangements and in dealing with financial issues. Our social workers will also assist families in the preparation of Advance Directives and with funeral arrangements.
They watch, on a daily basis, patients and families struggle to find meaning as they face the complex emotions that come with the end of life process. Gilchrist social workers have a unique opportunity to assist people with core existential questions.
During March, which is also National Social Work Month, we will share the stories of several Gilchrist social workers in order gain some more insight into the support they provide.
You will learn:
- how some Gilchrist’s social workers find themselves working in hospice
- how Gilchrist social workers process their own feelings about their experiences with patients and families
- how one patient feels about her Gilchrist social worker
- what one Gilchrist social worker views as her main role
